A 10 hour standoff with City of Newburgh Police ended with the arrest of a Newburgh man as he tried to escape through a window of the home he was holed up in shortly after 4:00 PM this afternoon.
26 year old Gosford Lembhard took four family members hostage after US Marshalls came to 57 Liberty Street to serve a warrant for his arrest on attempted murder charges early Wednesday morning.
Lembhard is the older brother of Michael Lembhard, who was shot and killed in March of this year after running from police as they attempted to arrest him on Liberty Street.
The elder Lembhard allowed the family members, which included 2 other brothers, a young niece and one of the brothers girlfriends, to leave through a window before he himself tried to flee the scene. Police were able to catch him as he tried to clear a neighbors porch. After a brief struggle with police, officers used a taser to subdue Lembhard.
The charges are the result of a September 9 incident from Orange County when Lembhard is accused of firing a gun into a car and nearby building in Newburgh.
Lembhard, who was free on $75,000 bond, was scheduled for arraignment on Friday, November 16, but didn’t show.
Lembhard faces charges of attempted murder in the second degree, attempted assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. He was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, because a 4 year old girl was at the scene of the shooting .
Liberty Street was closed off during the standoff which began about 6:00 AM this morning.
It is not known at this time what charges will be brought against Gosford Lembhard because of today’s incident as those charges are still pending at the time of this report.
